RFMBA Statement on BLM CRVFO Class 1 eMTB Comment Period
The Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association encourages our members, partners, and trail users to participate in the BLM Colorado River Valley Field Office’s current public scoping process regarding potential expanded access for Class 1 e-mountain bikes on designated mountain bike trails. Please read the full details in the BLM’s press release announcing the process, on this page. See RFMBA’s long held views on eMTB access on this page. And scroll to the bottom of this news post for our link to our comment letter submitted during this scoping process. Our understanding is that an additional public comment period will be announced later in this process, around mid summer or later.
This is an important public process, and we believe it is appropriate for trail users to share thoughtful, constructive input based on their own experiences on our local trail systems.
RFMBA recognizes that this topic brings a range of perspectives within the mountain bike community. Some riders support broader Class 1 eMTB access, while others have concerns about changing the character or management of existing non-motorized trails. As a primary trail stewardship organization in the Roaring Fork Valley, we believe it is important not to stay silent, but instead to help ensure that the conversation is informed by on-the-ground experience, trail stewardship values, and respectful public engagement.
RFMBA’s long-standing position is aligned with the idea that Class 1 pedal-assist eMTBs should be evaluated separately from other classes of e-bikes, and that any decisions about access should occur through an open, and public process. We also believe that any future changes should not compromise access for traditional mountain bikes or the quality of the trail experience.
For those choosing to comment, helpful input may include:
-
your direct experience on local trails
-
trail stewardship and maintenance considerations
-
user experience, etiquette, and safety observations
-
whether certain trail types may be more or less appropriate for Class 1 access
-
the importance of clear rules, signage, and education if any changes are made
We encourage comments that are specific, respectful, and solution-oriented. Whether you support expanded access, oppose it, or believe access should be limited to certain trail types or locations, your voice can help shape a better outcome.
The BLM’s public scoping period is open through March 25, 2026, and comments can be submitted through the BLM’s project page, found at this link: https://eplanning.blm.gov/Project-Home/?id=4CBC8245-E20C-F111-8406-001DD8029ED0
