New trail cutting and the addition of a jeep road climb on the southern portion of the Lorax Trail has created a fresh must-ride lollypop loop just outside Carbondale.
The Lorax Lollypop boasts 14 miles of rolling and rocky singletrack with great views of Mt Sopris and a thrilling descent into the "Bear's Lair."
The expanded loop uses jeep road #8275 in a clockwise direction to climb up to the beginning of the descent recently cut by the RFMBA Seasonal Trail Crew.
ROUTE NOTES:
There are two easy-to-miss intersections to be aware of if you are not familiar with this trail.
- The first is 1.3 miles into the ride. Look for a fence line on the left at the top of a gentle rocky rise. There is a tight chicane in which a rider would have to dismount and maneuver their bike on the rear wheel through the gap.
- The second intersection is at 4.5 miles into the ride. After scrambling up a short shaded hike-a-bike, be sure to take a left onto jeep road #8275.
This turn takes puts the rider off the Lorax Trail and onto a rocky and rutted jeep road climb that crests at the top of the Lorax Trail descent. After climbing the jeep road, enjoy the views of Mt Sopris, but also keep an eye out for the signs for the Lorax Trail that cuts through a sage meadow and gamble oak trees.
- Follow the rough trail and signs into a newly cut wild descent back down into the Bear's Lair.
- After about 1 mile of descending, keep an eye out for the left turn that you climbed out of earlier.
- Follow Lorax North back to the trailhead.
