RFMBA has partnered with local trail advocates in the formation of a new committee – New Castle Trails!
In response to a growing network of social trails north of the existing Colorow Trail, BLM encouraged RFMBA to engage with locals and the Town of New Castle to address the situation. We’re now a couple months into a process that will likely be a long and slow path to success for local trails.
A recent article in the Post Independent does a great job of explaining the situation. RFMBA recently provided a letter for Town Council’s consideration. The letter was supported unanimously, and the Town is now using the letter to request that BLM begin a process to study the existing trails for potential inclusion in the official BLM trail system. We’re hopeful that study will also set the stage for future trails in the area, as generally allowed within the BLM’s New Castle “Extensive Recreation Management Area”.
