The Smuggler Mountain / Hunter Creek area has been the recent focus of a multi-year collaborative planning process which is entering the implementation phase as of this summer. Recent approvals by the WRNF will allow RFMBA, City of Aspen, Pitkin County, ACES, and other groups to conduct improvement projects for habitat, wildlife, and recreation. Our focus is to create the best possible trail system in this area. While 2014 projects are still being determined, we expect to see new signage and trail maps implemented, general trail maintenance to improve drainage and lop back overgrown vegetation. We also hope to see a re-route of the Iowa Shaft short-cut trail that drops down steeply to the valley floor. The project we’re most excited to see move forward is the Hummingbird Traverse, which will link top of Lower Plunge (Sunnyside) to the Hunter Creek trail upvalley from the highest bridge crossing.
Stay tuned for project details as they become available!
