RFMBA is pleased to present a new map that details the series of trails that comprise the Coal Basin Big Loop! Big thanks to the Ajax Design & Communications, the Catena Foundation, and our friends at Coal Basin Ranch, who helped to make this project possible.
Look for the new map to be installed at Coal Basin Ranch’s trailhead parking lot kiosk as soon as conditions allow in the spring of 2025. As noted on the map:
This suggested ride covers some of the region’s best classic trails, connecting three high passes with tough climbs, rewarding descents, and incredible views along the entire route. A clockwise loop is recommended for better downhill riding sections. Use the MTBProject or TrailForks apps to navigate the many intersections you’ll encounter along this truly wild and remote backcountry loop. Watch out for frequent equestrians and cattle grazing on these trails.
Start at either Braderich Creek Trail or the Coal Basin Ranch trailhead. Coal Basin Trail #1953 follows a historic mining road with two major stream crossings (impassable during early summer), and then turns into Coal Basin North Trail #1953, where the route can be tricky to follow. Ascending the first pass usually includes some short hike-a-bike sections. Turning around for an out-and-back ride from this pass is a great option for a shorter adventure that totals 15+miles with 2,150’ of climbing and descending.
From this first pass, continue north, descending on Dexter Park Trail #1953 and Thompson Creek Road #306. Cross the creek to begin climbing the Lake Ridge Lakes Trail #2093, and consider taking a break at the lakes before gaining the second pass.
Descend east, then take Parsnip Flat #305.2B to South Thompson Trail #305. The narrow, challenging singletrack leads to the final highpoint pass. After taking in the views, descend via Braderich Creek Trail #1952.
Congratulations—you’ve completed over 24 miles and 4,200+ feet of elevation gain in the beautiful White River National Forest!
