In the past two seasons, RFMBA has significantly grown its Trail Agent Program. Trail Agents are independent volunteers who are often the unsung heroes of our region’s hundreds of miles of trails. They are responsible for keeping our trails clear of fallen trees and overgrowth, and they inform our Seasonal Trail Crew of where work is needed most throughout the season. In 2024, Trail Agents performed 1,001 hours of trail work, including clearing 289+ trees from trails. These volunteer efforts equate to more than $36,000 (!) in valued time spent maintaining tread and corridor. This is a 300% increase in the reported number of hours from two seasons ago!

Our top reporting Trail Agents this year are:

  • Trent Mahaffey
  • Luke Murphy
  • Bill Schoenecker
  • Stephen Glass
  • Jim Githens
  • Mike Rettig
  • Maxwell Higgins
  • Luke Demuth
  • Josh Cullen
  • Kate Wilson

These 10 awesome volunteers accomplished trail work needed from Aspen to New Castle, making up more than half of this season’s total Trail Agent hours. A big round of applause for all of their efforts!

If you would like to get involved and become a Trail Agent, please learn more about the program here, and be on the lookout next spring for announcements for training opportunities. We typically hold one in-person training session per season to get more locals equipped to help RFMBA in its increasingly expansive efforts to keep our trails in safe condition. You can also reach out to riley@rfmba.org to learn about how to become a Trail Agent at any time… by reading the program manual and scheduling a one-on-one meeting to complete your training.
